Sullinger, Barnes, Jones, Lamb, Taylor Named To Preseason All-America Team

Oct 31, 2011 3:37 PM

Jared Sullinger was a unanimous preseason All-America pick, headlining a group that also includes Harrison Barnes, Terrence Jones, Jeremy Lamb and Jordan Taylor.

Taylor was the only senior named to the first team.

"I just hope he doesn't think he has to score 40 a game this year," coach Bo Ryan said. "I think we're going to be in trouble if he does. He doesn't. He wants to be even more consistent. He wants to be more inclusive with his teammates, maybe in transition. There are different things we're looking at in trying to get done with a different-sized team maybe on the floor."

Boatright Upsets Drummond To Win UConn Dunk Contest

Oct 15, 2011 3:42 PM

Ryan Boatright upset teammate Andre Drummond to win Connecticut's dunk contest on Friday.

Boatright is barely 6-foot-0, while Drummond is nearly 7-foot-0.

"I've been doing that dunk since high school," said Boatright, the freshman guard from Aurora, Ill.

Boatright got his assists from sophomore Shabazz Napier, who for the first dunk sat in a chair and flipped the ball up. Then Napier started, twirled the ball off the side of the backboard and Boatright, soaring through the air, scooped it up and slammed it.

When a third dunk-off was required, Boatright slammed it and hung on the rim several seconds. The six judges, including UConn President Susan Herbst, ESPN's Doris Burke, former players Hasheem Thabeet, Ray Allen and Kemba Walker, gave him a score of nine.

Jim Calhoun has been raving about his athletic ability for a while, and compares him to Husky Dream Season guard John Gwynn, a small, energetic player who can come off the bench and provide that "microwave" effect.

Drummond Staying Late, Working On Shooting Mechanics

Oct 8, 2011 3:56 PM

Andre Drummond has impressed his new Connecticut teammates, as well as alumni.

"He's very athletic," Alex Oriaki said. "The way he can move, the sky's the limit for that kid."

"He's a monster," said Kemba Walker. "He doesn't even know what he has yet."

Drummond has been staying late after the pickup games, working on new shooting mechanics at the free-throw line.

Walker was one of the first to congratulate Drummond when news broke of his decision to attend Connecticut.

"I was very surprised," Walker said, "I didn't realize [he was considering it], but I think he made the right decision. I wouldn't want to see anyone pass up on the chance to go to college, especially a school like UConn."
